Obituary

Lila Ragan Varnadore, 94, passed away on January3, 2022 in Jamestown, North Carolina. Mrs. Varnadore was born on May 4, 1927 to the late Jesse and Mattie Parkerson Ragan, in Eastman, Georgia. She was the youngest of four children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Edwin Varnadore; siblings, Aubrey, Wilbur and Avis; her daughter-in-law, Moira Varnadore; granddaughter, Bryony Varnadore Simms (Francis); and a great-granddaughter, Shelby Brooke Nicholson. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; her son; two granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters. Mrs. Varnadore graduated from Dodge County High School in Eastman, Georgia, where she was active in many activities and known as caring and friendly. She began her career as a civil servant at Robins Air Force Base, worked as a wedding planner in Orlando, Florida, as a houseparent at Baptist Children’s Homes in Tennessee and West Virginia and as an instructor for special needs adults for the state of Georgia. She was an active member in the Baptist church where she was involved in activities for women and took great joy in serving as a Sunday School Teacher for children. She was always involved with and supportive of her children’s activities. She was a loving friend who was always willing to listen. She maintained a positive attitude although she faced challenges with her health. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. She was an avid reader who enjoyed cooking, gardening and sewing. She and her husband had a business building dollhouses, furniture and other wooden toys. A celebration of her life will held at First Baptist Church of Haynesville, 2953 US Highway 341 South, Hawkinsville, Georgia 31036 with Pastor David Fisher officiating at a later date to be announced. A private burial will be held at Poplar Springs Cemetery in Eastman, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Haynesville in, memory of Lila. Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel in Greensboro, NC has the honor of assisting the Varnadore family. Stokes Southerland Funeral Home, 206 5th Ave., Eastman, Georgia 31023 is in charge of final arrangements in Georgia.
