Obituary
Roddy - Tom Sawyer, age 85, passed away Friday evening, November 11, 2022, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with multiple cancers. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 14, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. in Roddy Baptist Church. Burial will be in Roddy Community Cemetery.
Tom was born in Roddy and was the ninth of twelve children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Beaufort Bryant Sawyer, Sr. (Minnie Lila Belflower) of Roddy. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Jim H. Sawyer, Opal Giddens, Zell Swan and Estelle Yearty and his grandson, Wyatt Dains.
Mr. Sawyer attended Roddy School and graduated from Chester High School in 1956. Tom’s first job was delivering groceries for Southerland’s Super Foods in Cochran. He parlayed his earnings to buy a bicycle then a car to increase his earnings. He worked at Armstrong Corp. in Macon and saved to purchase his first farm acreage. Building on hard work and a great team management, he ultimately farmed 2,200 acres of land growing cotton, corn, and peanuts. His substantial hog operation led him to coin the phrase “It smells like money.†He brought the first peach orchard to Dodge County in the 1970’s, and proved the sandy soil grew the best peaches in Middle Georgia. Mr. Tommy and Mrs. Jean, as their customers knew them, expanded the fruit farm to include strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries as well as onions and their famous soft serve ice cream. They retired from farming and built their home off Yearty Cemetery Road in Roddy.
Tom raised horses, barrel raced, and raced on the quarter mile track in Hawkinsville. Later his interest moved to cutting horses, and he and his family attended the Augusta Futurity for many years. In the early 1990’s he hosted the community for after Thanksgiving Barbeques on his farm. He enjoyed watching Western movies and taking road trips. He travelled several times to Illinois to tour the John Deere Factory. He led his six brothers, son, and some nephews on trips out west including three trips to the Grand Canyon. He traversed the Bright Angel Trail twice. Tom was named Farmer of the Year and Farm Family of the Year in Dodge County. He served on the Baker Academy Board of Education and had served in the Army National Guard. He was a member of the Roddy Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife; his son and daughter; step-children; grandchildren; great grandchildren; his brothers; his sisters; over thirty nieces and nephews, close cousins and friends of the Belflower, Cook, Greene, and Yeomans families.
The family is at and will greet friends one hour before the service Monday at Roddy Baptist Church.
