Obituary
MRS. ILA JO LAND CHEEK, age 80, of Rhine, GA, died Thursday, October 31, 2024, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Thursday, November 7, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Jason Seifert officiating, with interment in Old Daniel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Jo was born on May 24, 1944, in the Owensboro Community of Wilcox County, where she spent her early years and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Owensboro. She attended high school at Rochelle High School but left high school early to help with the family business, Lands Grocery. She later worked in a factory in Rochelle, GA before she met her husband, John. They married in 1965 before he left to fight for his country in Vietnam from 1967-1969. During that time, she lived in San Diego, CA before later returning to Rochelle, GA. Jo had a passion for helping others and worked as a caregiver for over 20 years at Homeplace and later Dogwood Gardens. She loved the mountains and always wanted to travel there. She also enjoyed watching the Food Network and HGTV, especially “In the Kitchen with David†and “Pioneer Womanâ€. Jo loved flowers, and going shopping, especially at J.C. Penney’s, her favorite store. She was affectionately known as “Nana†and “Nannie†to her grandchildren and “Grammy†to her great-granddaughter. Jo was the daughter of the late Gertrude Owens Land and Joe Daniels Land and was preceded in death by her Husband, John F. Cheek, and her in-laws, Nelson McWhorter, Constance “Cookie†Seifert, Ron Cheek, and Linda Cheek Mullis.
She is survived by her Daughters; Son-in-law; Grandchildren; Great-Granddaughter; Sister; Sister-in-law; Nieces and Nephews; Numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family may be contacted at the Cheek residence and will receive friends in Southerland Funeral Chapel from 1:00PM-2:00PM Thursday, November 7.
