Obituary

Vesta was born on Jun 16, 1924, by natural birth. In the fall of 1928 she started to school at Five Points in Mt. Ararat. The first year, she went to Prima (today's kindergarden) in the Five Points Church. Then she entered the first grade in a little one-roomed country school. She went to Mt. Ararat Church with her family on Sunday. During the summer of 1932, the family moved outside of Chauncy in a house that was behind the Peacock house of 1970's. In the fall of 1932, Vesta entered Chauncy High School. She retook the thrid grade because her mother thought she was a teacher's pet and hadn't learned anything. During the sixth grade, she thought she was grown and quit school. But was convinced to go back to school later. On October 3, 1942, Vesta married W.C. Locke. She had met W.C. through his sister Myrtle, in school. After the marriage, she continued to go to school. W.C. was living in the Burch House when they were married with W.C.'s parents. Afterwards they moved into the Grant house with his parents. In the spring of 1943, Vesta graduated from the eleventh grade and in August gave birth to Ida Mae. Afterwards, the family moved about for a period of two months. From the Grant house to the Burch house, back to the Grant house, to the LaVater house, to the house on the ridge. and finally to one of Robert Locke's houses. Robert was W.C.'s brother. There were three houses on the land. One was used as a store (Locke's Groceries.) In 1949, Vesta filed for a divorce. W.C. stayed in the house while Vesta moved next door with Robert and his wife, Carrie. On July 3, 1950, the couple decided to reunite. But, while their cloths and furniture were moved to a house across Joiner Creek, each of them stayed in his/her present house. They separated again before they could move in with their cloths and furniture. Upon separation, it was decided that W.C. would keep Ida Mae and Vesta their unborn child. After giving birth to Juanita by natural birth, she continued to work and live at Robert's for a couple of years. Then she started running Burch's Groceries which was just up the hill from Robert's. She worked there for a couple of years also. During this period, she started seeing Willard who bought his groceries from her. After this time, she left Juanita at Robert's and went to work in Eastman at the truckstop. Later she worked in McRae at the Sugar Creek Cafe. She was a cook in both places. Perhaps this is where she learned to cook so well.
