Obituary

MR. WRIGHT THOMAS HARRELL, SR., age 91, of Rhine, GA, died Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, July 25, at Rhine Baptist Church, with Rev. Ricky Gilmore and Mr. Gary Ryals officiating, with interment in Bay Springs Cemetery in Rhine. Wright was born in Rhine, a graduate of Rhine High School, and a dedicated church member and chairman of the deacons at Rhine Baptist Church, where he also served on many committees over the years. During his early years, he worked on the family farm, the Seaboard Airline Railroad Company, a bus driver for the Dodge County Board of Education, the Central Sash and Door Company in Macon, and served in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After his service, he returned home to work at O.M. Stuckey Pulpwood Company. Later, he purchased the pulpwood office and became the owner and operator of W.T. Harrell Pulpwood Company for over 30 years. While operating the pulpwood company, he was also a rural mail route carrier, and in the evenings he worked on radios and TVs, a trade he learned while serving in the Army. He was a former chairman of the Department of Children and Family Services of Dodge County and was a co-owner, investor and founder of numerous nursing homes throughout the state. He was the co-founder of the famous Rhine community fish fry held on Thursdays at Griff Bowen’s farm for over 45 years, a must stop for every major political campaign in Georgia and all local campaigns. He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed hunting, spending time on his swamp land, and was a strong advocate for forest conservation. Wright was the son of the late Beulah Kirkley Harrell and Thomas Walter Harrell and was preceded in death 6 Siblings, Villa Harrell, Lillian Harrell, Margaret Burnham, John Willard “Buster” Harrell, Helen Mauldin, and Imogene Clark. He is survived by his Wife of 69 years; Daughter; Son; 5 Grandchildren; 6 Great-Grandchildren; Numerous Nieces and Nephews. Mr. Harrell will lie-in-state at Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home Thursday, July 23 from 12:00PM until 5:00PM, Friday from 9:00AM until 4:00PM. The family may be contacted at the Harrell residence.
