A graveside service will be held at New Union Church Cemetery on Friday, June 30, 2023 at 11:00 am. LaVerne was born on January 24, 1949 in McRae, Georgia to the late Lutrelle Selph Knowles and Floyd Knowles, Sr. and was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-two years, Johnny Cranford. The oldest of five children, she was reared in Telfair County on the family farm which is where a strong work ethic and a unique degree of grit and determination began to form. As a student, she excelled and enjoyed studying and learning about a variety of topics. In December of 1969, she married Johnny Cranford and they began their life together in Eastman. LaVerne attended Brewton Parker College and later graduated from Tift College and Mercer University. Known for her persnickety disposition, she took great pride in her career as one of the first female state probation officers in Middle Georgia where she earned the respect of her colleagues and others involved in the judicial system. LaVerne was a member of New Union Baptist Church. Following retirement, she enjoyed being involved with the Garden Club and the Pilot Club. Ms. Cranford is survived by her daughter, son, five grandchildren along with her sisters, and brothers and their families.
