Obituary

Eloise Johnson Smith, 99, of Chauncey, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Monday, December 4, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 7, at Providence Primitive Baptist Church, Helena, GA. She will be laid to rest in the Zion Hope Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, December 6, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Lowe’s Funeral Home. Mrs. Smith was born in Wheeler County on October 21, 1918, to Henry J. Johnson and Clyde J. Johnson. She graduated from McRae-Helena High School in 1938. Service to others and work were important parts of her life. She began work at the Telfair County Welfare department on June 1, 1938 followed by the AAA farm office from May 1940 to July 31, 1944. She later worked for I.L. Nix CPA and then C.M. Gooden/Firestone Store through 1945. Next she worked at the Peninsular Lurton Co. in Helena for seven years and in 1953 moved to the First Federal Savings and Loan Assn. where she retired as Vice President on October 1, 1983 after 30 years. She lived out her retirement on their farm in Dodge County. On December 5, 1940, she married Leonard Sidney Smith. She was a faithful member of the Providence Primitive Baptist Church serving as church treasurer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, her son, George Leonard Smith, brother, Wade J. Johnson, and sisters, Lucille J. Smith and Inez J. Carter. Survivors include her daughter, grandson; sister, and numerous nieces and nephews.
