Descendants of Dodge County Settlers

Current Methodology

This site is about Dodge County Settlers.

Therefore certain actions have been taken with the data.

1.  They are labeled in the Dodge Field as "Yes" indicating that some time in their life they lived in Dodge County.  This became necessary as it was discovered that some people came to Dodge and lived in Dodge all of heir lives, other moved in and out of Dodge.

 2.  Descendants of family that moved from County that were not associated with the County are not included in the family without any notice

3.  People born/lived and/or married in Dodge County, but then moved before their children were born, There children ae indicated as non-Dodge Children

4.  When a Dodge Man marries a non-Dodge wife, she is indicated as a non-Dodge Wife.

5.  When a Dodge Woman marries a non-Dodge husband and their children do not return to Dodge County, the husband is labeled as non-Dodge Husband (last name).  This was done to allow for married name of wife to be included in the data.

Stages of Settlers

Settlers into Dodge County can be divided up into the below three stages.

Pioneers (Before 1880):  The genealogical data is setup to identify the first settlers of a surname to enter Dodge County.  One normally thinks all people with the same surname being related.  Obviously, if you go far enough back in history, this would be true.  But, when one looks at a county that was created in 1870, this is not true.  Data included herein, addresses the date that each family head came to Dodge County.

The History of Dodge County identifies many pioneers and their families.  Some of these came into Pulaski, Laurens and other surrounding counties and then spread into the Dodge County as it was created.

**Some other names were identified during the search for this website!

Early Settlers (1880 to 1930):  This period forms the main growth of Dodge County with many people coming into the County due the great tracks of timber and the growing turpentine enterprise.

Continuing Settlers (After 1930):  Even after this period people are still coming into Dodge County for various reasons.

Population of Settlers

While it is very apparent that the early settlers as well as their descendant were very mobile.  Many did remain in Dodge County, many others left the County for their own reasons.

*Note:  Counts taken from various locations.

As the numbers above indicates, the population of Dodge County has varied between 14k and 23k from about 5K when it was formed in 1870.  But what if all of those descendants had stayed in Dodge County?  I propose, the population would be greater than the county could contain.

Below is an indication of the racial mix of the County.  While this is just one year, I suspect that the ratio has remained very similar thru the years.
